Pure Data is an Open Source graphical programming language created by Miller Puckette (creator of Max/MSP). When used with graphics libraries such as GEM, PDP, and Gridflow it can be used to create a variety of complex and interactive visuals. My first interest in this area was creating visuals corresponding to audio input. After a residency at the Experimental Television Center, I decided to use Pd to emulate the classic video synthesizers that I was able to learn about such as the Sandin and Jones as well as take advantage of digital manipulation of pixels and 3D via openGL. I have used Pd for live performances as well as creating videos such as podcasts.
Some Pd visual related projects include the following:
July 07 - Clips for iOrpheus, Australia

In preparation for the iOrpheus performance in Australia, I created a series of open source clips in Pd for people to mix, mash, and incorporate into their own versions of the story.
April 06 - Feb 07 - Cathedral iPod Opera
During this period I had the honor of creating 26 videos for William Duckworth and Nora Farrell’s iPod Opera which were podcast every two weeks and allowed me to experiment in various ways of mapping audio data to visuals.

Fall 2006
The stills below show some of what I was doing around the time of my presentation at Piksel. They built on what I learned at ETC and are all based on converting audio signals into graphics.

Spring / Summer 2006
During this period I started creating patches with a more organic look by introducing a feedback loop - which can produce amazing results but can get out of control quite easily.
