Pure Data is an Open Source graphical programming language created by Miller Puckette (creator of Max/MSP). When used with graphics libraries such as GEM, PDP, and Gridflow it can be used to create a variety of complex and interactive visuals. My first interest in this area was creating visuals corresponding to audio input. After a residency at the Experimental Television Center, I decided to use Pd to emulate the classic video synthesizers that I was able to learn about such as the Sandin and Jones. I have used Pd for live performances as well as creating videos such as podcasts.
You Tube Videos
Among the videos on my You Tube Channel, you can see some of my work with Pd, although through compression and file type conversions the quality is pretty bad. The live performances look great though!

April 06 - Feb 07 - Cathedral iPod Opera
During this time period I had the honor of creating 26 videos for William Duckworth and Nora Farrell's iPod Opera.
Some stills can be found here. These were produced every two weeks and allowed me to experiment and learn quite a bit. All of the graphics were created using Pd. You can watch them on the Cathedral Website
Fall 2006
Video Synthesis with Pd and Gem - here
are some stills from using a patch similar to the one I used at Piksel 06. Since then, I have added new features such as additional oscillators and modulation.
Spring / Summer 2006
About the time that William Duckworth and Nora Farrell asked me to create videos for the iPod Opera, I started creating patches with a much more "organic" look. This is accomplished by creating a video feedback loop and while it can produce amazing results can also get out of control quite easily.
Small screen shots of some of these patches can be found here.
